YSU’s Lydic second in NOPGA event at YCC

Youngstown State golfer shot Thomas Lydic 73 to finish second in Wednesday’s Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf Collegiate Preview at Youngstown Country Club.
Joey Cilone shot a 71 to place first and Zachary Jacobson of Poland tied for third place with Jason McQuown (YSU) and Steven Sveda (YSU) with a 74.
Also in the top 10 were Nicholas Braydich, and Justin Hallapy (YSU) with 75 and Evan Standohar (YSU) with a 77.
In the women’s event, YSU’s Christina Cooper and Courtney Shutt tied for first with Kaitlin Neumann with 76.
Also in the Top 10 were Mia Barchetti (YSU) with a 77, Haleigh Guerrero (YSU) with an 85.
Seahawks’ Browner will not be charged
SEATTLE
Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner will not be charged after an allegation that he punched his girlfriend’s father at a Southern California home.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office told the Seattle Times on Wednesday that there would be no charges filed against the 32-year-old, but did not elaborate on the investigation.
Police in Pomona said that on July 5 officers were sent to a home where Browner’s girlfriend, the mother of his two children, was living. Browner lives in the same neighborhood.
Notre Dame TE Jones academically ineligible
SOUTH BEND, Ind.
Notre Dame tight end Alize Jones will miss the season because he is academically ineligible.
Jones tweeted a message Wednesday saying he hadn’t met his “academic responsibility” and coach Brian Kelly issued a statement confirming that Jones won’t play this season but is permitted to practice and remains on the roster. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound sophomore from Las Vegas said he plans to stay at Notre Dame “and work even harder.”
Jones said he is disappointed, but plans to make the best of the situation.
Jones started five games as a freshman, finishing with 13 catches for 190 yards. The Irish have depth at tight end with Durham Smythe returning after missing most of last season with injuries and Nic Weishar and Tyler Luatua also back.
Muni He advances in U.S. Women’s Amateur
SPRINGFIELD, Pa.
China’s Muni He made a 35-foot birdie putt on the 22nd hole to beat qualifying medalist Mariel Galdiano on Wednesday in the first round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
The 17-year-old He got the last of the 64 spots in match play Wednesday morning in a playoff, holing a 22-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole. She three-putted for bogey on the first playoff hole Tuesday, and had to return Wednesday to fight four other players for the last position.
The 18-year-old Galdiano, from Pearl City, Hawaii, dropped out a day after setting the championship stroke-play qualifying record at 9-under 133. She became the third straight medalist to fall in the first round, following Bethany Wu in 2014 and Angel Yin last year.
Galdiano forced extra holes with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th. She made the only two bogeys of the match, the first on the par-4 14th to drop into a tie and the second on the par-5 17th to fall a hole down.
Nike dropping its golf equipment business
BEAVERTON, Ore.
Nike is dropping its golf equipment business to focus on shoes and apparel.
The company said Wednesday that it will no longer make clubs, balls and bags.
“We’re committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel,” Nike Brand President Trevor Edwards said in a statement. “We will achieve this by investing in performance innovation for athletes and delivering sustainable profitable growth for Nike Golf.”
Nike said it will partner with more of the world’s best golfers. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie have deals with the company.
