A man who was to go on trial Tuesday for resisting arrest pleaded no contest in municipal court.

Jerrell Gibbs, 34, of Garfield Avenue, was found guilty by Judge Elizabeth Kobly on charges of resisting arrest and driving under suspension. She sentenced him to 90 days house arrest and one-year’s probation. If he violates his house arrest, he will have to serve a 120-day jail sentence.

Gibbs was accused of leading police March 6 on a long foot chase after he ran from an accident at West Delason and Rosedale avenues on the South Side.

Man faces theft charge

A township man was arraigned Tuesday before Judge Joseph M. Houser of Mahoning County Area Court on a theft charge after surrendering to police Monday.

Police issued a warrant May 13 for a charge of theft through deception for Robert Powell, 55, of Applecrest Court. He is accused of taking $2,200 from Premier Real Estate Management while working as the company’s bookkeeper.

His employers fired him April 14 after they discovered the theft and reported the matter to police.

Gun found after chase

YOUNGSTOWN

Police found a gun after a foot chase Tuesday afternoon on the South Side.

Reports said an officer tried to pull over a car about 2:50 p.m. in the 100 block of East Avondale Avenue when the driver pulled into a driveway at high speed and smashed into a fence. The driver ran away but was caught a short time later.

The gun was found during the chase.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for observation, complaining of chest pains.

Vacation Bible school

BOARDMAN

Calvary Baptist Church and Creative Corner Learning Center, 1463 Shields Road, have teamed up to host Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. until noon through Thursday with the theme of Christian Olympics.

Children will learn to prepare for life, how to run the race in life, and how to stay in the race as they grow.

The camp concludes with a closing ceremony in which each child will receive a Christian medal.

Special meeting

CORTLAND

The Mathews school board will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in the board office, 4096 Cadwallader-Sonk Road, to discuss placing a bond issue and tax levy on the November ballot.

The bond issue would pay for more than $23 million for school building improvements and an additional 0.5-mill tax would provide funds for the acquisition, construction, enlargement, renovation and financing of general permanent improvements.

Road to close

WEST MIDDLESEX, PA.

State Route 551 (Pulaski Road) in Shenango Township, Mercer County, is scheduled to be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily from Thursday through Aug. 12, weather permitting, for replacement of drainage pipes at various locations.

A detour will be posted using state Route 18 (New Castle Road) and state Route 3007 (Pulaski-Mercer Road).

Park walkway closed

YOUNGSTOWN

The boardwalk located on West Gorge Trail, or Trail 9, in Mill Creek Park will be closed until further notice because it needs to be replaced, the MetroParks said in a news release.

West Gorge Trail, which has been closed since June due to the boardwalk issue, will be open as an out-and-back trail.

Stalking charges

WARREN

Timothy R. Finlaw, 67, of West Main Street in Cortland is in the Trumbull County jail, charged with misdemeanor menacing by stalking after being arrested Tuesday on a complaint by a girl, 16, who said a man in a truck tried twice to pick her up.

The girl said she was standing in her front yard on Oak Street at 11 a.m. Monday when the man waved her over to his truck. It was the second time the man had done this, she said.

Finlaw is likely to be arraigned on the charge Wednesday in Warren Municipal Court.
