Voters in the Sebring school district can vote between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. today on a 1-percent income-tax renewal on the special-election ballot. The renewal would raise about $500,000 a year for five years. Voters rejected the income-tax renewal 560 to 511 in the November 2015 general election.
MetroParks official returns to position
CANFIELD
Mill Creek MetroParks has welcomed back a department head who resigned his post in May. Kevin Smith returned to the position of finance director/treasurer last week, the MetroParks confirmed. He reportedly reached out to the MetroParks to express interest in coming back to the job. His salary is $70,000 per year, an increase from his previous annual salary of $68,120.
Lane restriction
GIRARD
Beginning Wednesday, state Route 711 northbound between Gypsy Lane and state Route 11 will be reduced to one lane for pavement replacement through late November. This work is part of a $91.5 million project to widen Interstate 80 between state Routes 11 and 193. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late July 2018.
Extradition hearing for rape suspect
WARREN
William Casey Jr., 55, of Girard, accused of committing rape and other sex crimes against a child in Mercer County, will appear in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday for an extradition hearing. He was arrested Saturday afternoon at a home on Ward Avenue in Girard after being charged by the Pymatuning Township Police Department. Casey is in the county jail. Police said the crimes occurred in December 2015.
Culvert work
LISBON
Work will begin today to replace a culvert on state Route 164 south of Lisbon in Columbiana County. Starting Aug. 15, state Route 164 will be closed for 14 days. Traffic will be detoured north on state Route 164 to state Route 518 east to U.S. Route 30 west back to state Route 164, and reverse. Contractor for the $461,000 project is Shelly and Sands Inc. from Columbus, and the completion date is Aug. 29.
Durkin to appear on Vindy Radio
YOUNGSTOWN
Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will join Louie B. Free’s “Brainfood from the Heartland” broadcast on Vindy Talk Radio today to talk about opioid and heroin abuse. Other scheduled guests are Dr. Karen Davis from United Poultry Concern, who will discuss bird flu, and Monica Gabrielle, whose husband died in the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, will discuss the recently declassified 28 pages of 9/11 documents.
