YOUNGSTOWN

The finalist who didn’t get the city schools CEO job will work instead as the district’s chief academic officer.

Krish Mohip, chief executive officer, announced Monday that Tyrone Olverson is filling that role, effective Monday.

His annual salary is $134,000.

“I’m excited to have Mr. Olverson join me as the chief academic officer,” Mohip said. “He brings with him experience at all levels of administrative experience in multiple settings: rural, suburban and urban. He has a strong grasp of the instructional shifts needed to meet the rigors of the Ohio Learning Standards and of our educators and school leaders.”

Mohip pointed out that the new CAO already has been vetted by the district’s academic distress commission.

“He understands the urgency of the situation here in Youngstown and has the leadership and experience needed to help bring about significant improvements in an expedited time frame,” Mohip said.

Olverson, a former superintendent of Finneytown Schools near Cincinnati, was a finalist in May for the CEO post.

At Finneytown, he was responsible for planning and implementing an effective, standards-based instructional program.

Last month, Mohip brought Olverson into the district as a contractor to help the CEO learn more about the schools’ central office and how it supports teachers and students.

The central office housed in the Irene L. Ward Administration building on West Wood Street is home to the superintendent, assistant superintendent, executive director of teaching, treasurer and learning and several other administrators.

For that work, Olverson was paid $525 per day up to 15 days.

Mohip said Olverson proved to be an asset during that time.

Before Finneytown, Olverson served as curriculum director and a principal in the Licking Heights Local School District in Central Ohio.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati.

He is pursuing a doctorate.

“The students of Youngstown deserve the very best from the district,” Mohip said. “Our children do not have the luxury of waiting for us to get this right. Mr. Olverson is a key member of my senior leadership team to ensure that we provide a significantly improved educational experience for our children this school year.”
