City OKs plan to replace windows, terra cotta at downtown hotel site

YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s Design Review Committee approved today plans to replace windows and restore the terra cotta to the proposed downtown DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.

This part of the work will cost NYO Group about $2 million to $3 million, said Paul Hagman, the project’s historic-preservation architect.

Interior work to remove debris and other items inside the Stambaugh Building, the hotel’s location at 44 E. Federal St., began late last week, Hagman said.

The project is expected to be finished by the end of next year, he said.

The hotel project will cost $31 million. If a nearby parking deck is demolished and replaced, the project’s cost increases to about $39.7 million.

Also today, the committee approved plans to demolish the rear portion of the First Educators Investment Corp. building at 147 W. Federal St.

About 100 to 150 bricks fell off the rear of the building in April 2015 with architects working on the project saying that part of the structure is in bad shape.
