Man leads police on chase due to boredom
OLYMPIA, Wash.
Sheriff’s officials say a Washington state man led police on a chase across two counties because he was bored.
The News Tribune reports that the 30-year-old man had no warrants or prior convictions and had a valid driver’s license when he took off through an intersection near Olympia late July 23. After burning rubber, a deputy sheriff tried to pull him over. The suspect did not comply.
The pursuit lasted for more than an hour and crossed two counties and 49 miles before the suspect hit a fence and was apprehended. Sheriff’s officials say there was no evidence that the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Sgt. Dave Odegaard says the man appears to have instigated the pursuit for fun. The suspect has been charged with three counts of attempting to elude a police vehicle.
Judge orders swastika face tattoos covered for trial
LAS VEGAS
A Las Vegas judge has ordered a cosmetologist to cover up a defendant’s neck and facial tattoos that include a swastika and the words “Most Wanted” on each day of his robbery trial.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that District Judge Richard Scotti decided that Bayzle Morgan’s tattoos should be concealed in an effort to get him a fair trial.
Morgan has tattoos including a swastika inside a clover under his eye, the words “Skin Head” on his eyebrows and “Baby Nazi” written across his neck.
It comes after an entire group of potential jurors said in June that they couldn’t be impartial after seeing Morgan’s tattoos. A new group was to see him in makeup for his trial.
Defense attorney Dan Bunin says he supports the move.
Morgan also has been charged with murder in a separate case.
Romania: Hang glider dumps contraband cigarettes in field
BUCHAREST, Romania
Romanian border police have confiscated thousands of packs of cigarettes which apparently were dropped in a field from a powered hang glider.
The Interior Ministry said July 25 that police discovered 10 boxes containing 5,000 packets of Chinese-produced Ashima cigarettes.
Police say they were patrolling the area with heat-detecting equipment when they spotted the glider flying into northeast Romania and returning to Moldova on July 24. Romanian and Moldovan authorities are investigating.
Novel Research marketing research company said this month that more than half of all cigarettes in Romania’s poor northeast are contraband, mainly from Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia.
