Campbell car crash

CAMPBELL

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Juanita Rich pulled a toddler out of a car early Sunday that had knocked over a utility pole at the end of her driveway on Twelfth Street between U.S. 422 and Coitsville Road and ended up on its roof in a neighbor’s yard. Rich was awakened by the crash about 4:15 a.m. She looked out her window and saw a police cruiser and the pole in splinters. She went outside and saw the car upside down on the neighbor’s lawn and heard a woman screaming that her baby was trapped. Rich said she jumped into the car through a broken window, but couldn’t unbuckle the child’s car seat. She yelled for a knife, which she used to cut the seat belt to get the child out. Rich, a surgical technician, said the woman and child did not appear to be seriously injured, but she thought the driver might have been more seriously hurt because he was ejected from the car and landed against a brick wall. She said police were not chasing the car with siren and lights on, but thought they were trying to make a traffic stop for a minor infraction when the driver sped away. Police said more information would be available today.
