‘Bourne’ tops box office; ‘Bad Moms’ scores
LOS ANGELES
Between the return of Matt Damon as super spy “Jason Bourne” and the promise of laughing along with a few fed-up ladies in the raunchy comedy “Bad Moms,” which had strong debuts, there was something new for everyone in theaters this weekend.
Even after a nearly 10-year hiatus, Matt Damon as Jason Bourne still draws a significant audience. The Paul Greengrass-directed sequel raked in a healthy $60 million in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The original R-rated comedy “Bad Moms,” from the writers of “The Hangover,” also had reason to crack open the champagne this weekend. The STX Entertainment film, starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn as a trio of moms on the edge, earned $23.4 million. “Bad Moms,” which debuted at No. 3, just barely missed second place to “Star Trek Beyond,” which earned $24 million.
Rounding out the top five at the box office were: “The Secret Life of Pets,” $18.2 million, fourth place; and “Lights Out,” $10.8 millionl fifth place.
Miss Teen USA winner to keep crown despite racist tweets
LAS VEGAS
The new Miss Teen USA will get to keep her crown despite an outcry over tweets she once wrote using racist language.
The Miss Universe Organization, which owns the Miss Teen USA pageant, issued a statement Sunday chastising Karlie Hay’s words but also “supporting her continued growth.”
After she was crowned Saturday night in Las Vegas, social media users found tweets containing the N-word linked to an account with Hay’s name.
A screenshot of the four tweets from 2013 and 2014 has been making the rounds online.
Pageant officials, referencing an apology Hay, of Tomball, Texas, posted to Twitter and Instagram, say the 18-year-old was going through personal struggles and regrets her words.
