12-year-old girl runs NY half-marathon by mistake
ROCHESTER, N.Y.
A 12-year-old western New York girl has wound up running 10 extra miles after she got into the wrong road race.
LeeAdianez Rodriguez had registered for the 5K race that was part of Sunday’s Rochester Regional Health Flower City Challenge. She thought she was arriving late at the starting line when the race started, so she began running with the rest of the runners.
It turned out she was running with the half-marathoners on the 13.1-mile course and not in the 5K, or 3.1 miles. Rodriguez says she realized about halfway through that she was in the wrong race but decided to finish.
She completed the half-marathon in 2:43:31.
Her mother became worried when she wasn’t among the finishers of the 5K, but they were reunited when she finished the half-marathon.
Police: Upstate NY mayor stole 111 road signs from the DOT
FRANKFORT, N.Y.
State police say an upstate New York mayor illegally provided his village with 111 road signs belonging to the state Department of Transportation.
Sixty-year-old Frank Moracco was charged Monday with official misconduct and petit larceny. Investigators say Moracco works as a sign-shop foreman for the DOT. He’s accused of stealing the signs and giving them to the Herkimer County village of Frankfort.
Village clerk Karlee Tamburro tells The Observer-Dispatch of Utica that Moracco will continue to serve as mayor, and the Mohawk Valley village isn’t commenting on the charges. Moracco couldn’t be reached at his office.
He’s due in court Tuesday.
Officials: NJ man skipped $12,000 in EZ Pass tolls
JERSEY CITY, N.J.
Authorities say a New Jersey man who owes $12,000 in unpaid EZ Pass tolls has had his black Mercedes Benz impounded and is facing charges.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo said Wednesday that Oscar Sanchez, of Jersey City, was pulled over by agency police Tuesday because the car didn’t have a front license plate.
Pentangelo says the officer discovered Sanchez had an expired driver’s license and more than 200 counts of missed EZ Pass toll payments amounting to about $12,000.
Sanchez faces charges including theft of service, operating a vehicle on a suspended license and not having a front license plate.
Sanchez was not immediately available to comment, and it’s unclear whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
