The Boardman Kiwanis Club welcomed Rick Smith, Jr., a magician, illusionist and entertainer, to Boardman Glenwood Middle School on April 2.

Smith, a magician based in Cleveland, came to Glenwood to put on a performance for guests of the community. Smith brought along his assistant, Julian Mendez, to help with different tricks and other illusions.

There were many different tricks that Smith performed. He was engaged with the audience and brought up volunteers for almost every trick he demonstrated. One trick that was demonstrated was a mind swap. There was a women and a young girl who both sat in chairs on stage, Smith then appeared to switch their minds and what he did to one person, would happen to the other.

Toward the end of the show, Mendez put on his own performance. Mendez, a dancer with the Cleveland Cavaliers Scream Team, hyped up the crowd by doing a flip over four children. After that he showed off some more flips and a small break dance performance.

Smith’s final performance was a trick inspired by famous magician, Harry Houdini. Smith had five volunteers come up to the stage to lock him in a wooden box. After the box was locked, Mendez stood on top with a curtain covering it. After a few short moments, the curtain was raised, Smith was standing on the box and Mendez ended up inside.

When the show was over, Smith had prizes to give away that were put together by the Kiwanis Club.

He also had a few postcards of his own to give away and some packs of magic cards for sale.

The Boardman Kiwanis Club sponsors several events like this throughout the year to promote bringing the community together.

Everything the Kiwanis Club does is to help benefit the community in some form.
