STRUTHERS

City council is looking to crack down on unsightly trash bins left curbside after garbage pickup.

Council voted Monday to amend its garbage ordinance so that bins must be taken back from the curb the night of the scheduled pickup day. The ordinance already prohibits placing garbage near the curb anytime prior to 24 hours before scheduled trash pickup.

Violation of the ordinance is punishable as a minor misdemeanor.

Additionally, council voted to renew its lease with Mill Creek MetroParks for upkeep of Yellow Creek Park in Struthers. The lease extends 25 years.

Council also approved the payment of $1,000 for a sign advertising the city of Struthers in the outfield of Bob Cene Park. Councilman Joseph Rudzik said the city purchases the advertisement every year as an expression of community pride.

In other business, council reviewed legislation setting 2016 annual salaries for various elected and non-elected city officials. Department head salaries – such as, $41,324 for the tax commissioner, $65,494 for the storm/water pollution manager, $52,946 for the fire chief, $52,946 for the police chief, $52,389 for the safety service director and $52,389 for the safety service director – are among those under consideration. These salaries do not represent raises this year.

The Struthers Historical Society will celebrate its 30th anniversary at 1 p.m. Sunday at 50 Terrace Street. The meeting is open to the public and will include refreshments.
