Released from jail
GIRARD
Johnathan J. Ulp, 39, of Warren Sharon Road in Vienna was released from the Trumbull County jail Tuesday after being arraigned on charges related to assaults on police officers Monday night. Ulp threw a chair at one officer while the officer was trying to take Ulp into custody, police said. The officer went to see Ulp because a female said Ulp had threatened suicide. Bond was set at $20,000 in Girard Municipal Court, and Ulp is required to be on house arrest. No plea was required on two counts of felonious assault, one of vandalism and one of assault; he pleaded not guilty on misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest. If convicted, Ulp could get more than 20 years in prison.
Lead legislation
COLUMBUS
The Ohio House began hearings on legislation to provide faster notice to the public of lead contamination in drinking water.
House Bill 512 was offered by Gov. John Kasich’s administration after lead issues surfaced in water systems in Sebring.
“This legislation will proactively protect Ohioans from lead contamination in drinking water by updating state requirements for water-quality testing,” Rep. Tim Ginter of Salem, R-5th, primary sponsor of the legislation, told members of the House’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Tuesday.
Among other provisions, the legislation would require testing for lead and copper in public water systems. Residents and other users would have to be informed within two days if the results of those tests show lead and copper levels above allowed thresholds. A larger, more in-depth public education program would have to be launched within 30 days. Under current law, notice has to be made within 30 days, with a public-education campaign within 60 days.
