Doctor joins practice

Ankle & Foot Care Centers recently added Dr. Ramy Fahim to its staff of physicians and surgeons. He is accepting new patients in the group’s Warren, Niles, Campbell and Andover offices. His practice includes foot and ankle surgery, diabetic foot care and treatment of heel pain and other lower-extremity ailments.

A Warren resident, Dr. Fahim joins Ankle & Foot from Naples, Fla., where he was a surgeon with Family Foot & Leg and was medical director for a home-healthcare service.

Prior to that, he completed a year-long fellowship in the Mahoning Valley with Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico of Ankle & Foot Care Centers, training in advanced surgical procedures, including total ankle replacements.

Doctor Fahim earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto in 2004 and a doctor of podiatric medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland in 2009.

One-hour workshop

Mercy Health Youngstown is offering a one-hour workshop, Health at Home, on May 19 in the Woodland Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. to noon and an evening session is secheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop and all materials are free. KSU awarded grant

The National Institute on Aging of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $444,238 grant to Kent State University for research on Alzheimer’s Disease.

“This award will allow us to better understand how a metabolic hormone, amylin, that shows benefits on memory and Alzheimer’s pathology, works,” said Dr. Gemma Casadesus, associate professor of biology Dr. Casadesus.

The purpose of the Academic Research Enhancement Award program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the nation’s research scientists. The grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions to contribute to the nation’s biomedical and behavioral research effort.

Open house planned

Mercy Health – Youngstown is having an open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 10 to celebrate the expansion of St. Joe’s at the Mall, Eastwood Mall, located in the Sears Concourse across from Tilt Studio.

St. Joe’s at the Mall is a community outreach of St. Joseph Warren Hospital that has offered health screenings, health information and health education programs for more than 10 years. Strong Bones Strong People, a strength-training program started seven years ago, offers people who have osteoporosis and weight-management issues tools based on each participant’s fitness evaluation.

Two years ago, SJATM expanded to add additional space and exercise machines. Staff members also have developed a broader approach to wellness – adding exercise classes such as Walk with a Doc, Fun Cardio group, Zumba Gold, T’ai Chi Chih, Easy Yoga, Chair Yoga, SilverSneakers classic chair exercises and a Parkinson’s exercise class.

The latest expansion targets cardio fitness to build strong hearts. With the additional space and 20 new cardio machines, SJATM has a complete wellness program in which participants receive personalized fitness evaluations and workout plans developed by an exercise physiologist.

The expansion is funded in part through donations to Mercy Health Foundation – Mahoning Valley.
