When 12-year-old Aurora Fares, below at left, won The Vindicator's American Girl Essay Contest this year, her mother, Maria Elena Fares of Canfield, describer her daughter's experience— going down to The Vindicator newsroom to receive her prize then having her picture appear on the front page of the D Section on Sunday, Feb. 28— as her daughter's best weekend ever! When Aurora's proud grandpa, Buddy Fares of Austintown, sent a clipping about Aurora's exciting news to his sister, she recalled a similar picture from nearly 100 years ago. It was of Aurora's great-grandmother, top left, Evelyn Louise (Conway) Fares, at about the same age, who was holding a large talking doll that had been the prize for an essay contest sponsored by The Youngstown Vindicator. Evelyn had written about cleaning the family garage so she could have a pony. She won the contest. Sadly, she didn't get the pony.
