YOUNGSTOWN

Friends of the Mahoning River are inviting local artists to submit original, two-dimensional art depicting their Mahoning River Vision Rendition of the future. One entry per person will be permitted, and the dimensions should be no larger than 18 by 24 inches. All artwork is relinquished at submission. A panel will judge entries on realistic expectations of the river’s potential vision. Winning entries will be displayed at Riverfest 2016. Submissions are due by Saturday. Projects can be submitted to Mahoning County Soil & Water Conservation District, Trumbull Water Soil & Water Conservation District, OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, or the Soap Gallery.

Scout recognition

WARREN

Greater Western Reserve Boy Scout Council, serving Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Mahoning, Trumbull and the eastern portion of Portage counties, will honor a youth council member who has performed a significant act of service deserving of special national recognition at 6 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road NE. Unbeknownst to the Scout, council personnel will be on hand at his troop’s court of honor to make the presentation. Also, Derek Emerson, operator of Chick-Fil-A in Howland, along with part of his marketing team, will attend to make a presentation to the recipient. Butterfly release

MERCER, PA.

A butterfly release will take place at 5 p.m. at the Mercer Relay For Life on June 11 at Mercer High School track. The release is sponsored by PPG Reflections and Memories Relay team. The public is invited to participate. Butterflies can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone special for $10. Orders are being accepted through Saturday by calling 724-699-6620.

Fire destroys home

JOHNSTON

A Trumbull County family of five escaped without injury when their home on Warner Road burned down about 3 a.m. Saturday. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, fire spread from the porch to the home and their vehicle. The house is a total loss. Police say a lot of ammunition in the house exploded. Officials believe the fire started from a heat lamp.
