Canfield residents raise funds for community concerts
CANFIELD
Canfield residents have raised $3,000 toward Concerts on the Green, an event city council decided to cut due to a decrease in city revenue.
When he heard about the event getting cut, Jack Dixey launched a mission to ensure his mother, Barb Dixey, 90, of Canfield, and an avid concertgoer, gets to see another annual eight-concert season this year.
Dixey at the Wednesday evening council meeting asked residents to fund the community event.
Councilman Chuck Tieche put a motion on the floor for council to fund the concerts for another year and it was not seconded.
Despite that, city Manager Joe Warino said residents, on their own, have come up with 75 percent of the funds with only a little more to go to pay for all eight concerts.
“I hate asking people for money, but I hate [even more] that council isn’t community aware enough to keep this alive,” Dixey said.
Dixey said donations are tax deductible and advised those who wish to donate to make a check out to the city of Canfield Concert Fund, this way it cannot go into the general fund. Additional money raised beyond the cost for this year will roll over into next year’s concert fund.
For donation questions, call Dixey at 419-610-9270 or contact him via Facebook.
In other news, city officials agreed to meet at 6:30 a.m. every Wednesday until they find a solution to their decreased revenue problem.
The meetings are open to the public and will be at the Canfield Administrative Building, 104 Lisbon St.
“We have a lot of discussion about what to do in the fall,” Warino said.
