CLEVELAND
Martin Yavorcik, a failed 2008 Mahoning County prosecutor candidate, will be sentenced today on eight felonies.
Yavorcik was convicted March 25 in the Oakhill Renaissance Place corruption scandal on one count each of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, conspiracy and tampering with records, two counts of money laundering and three counts of bribery.
Yavorcik, of Boardman, a first-time offender, faces up to 29 years in prison, but is not expected to be sentenced to an amount even close to the maximum.
Insanity plea

A 28-year-old man charged with fatally beating his 87-year-old grandfather March 28 with a hammer in their Harvard Street residence has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Julius Williams, who is jailed on an aggravated-murder charge in the death of William Cox, entered that plea Tuesday through his lawyer, John B. Juhasz. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court accepted the written plea.
Gigantic Garage Sale

The 22nd Angels for Animals Gigantic Garage Sale begins today at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Early-bird admission is $10, running from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wristbands will be available beginning at 7 a.m.
Admission from noon to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday is $2. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday admission is free, and everything is 50 percent off. From 3:15 to 5 p.m. Sunday, there will be a $10 cost for a wristband allowing all you can fit in your vehicle for just the wristband price. Antiques will cost $20.
Autism campaign
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley is the beneficiary of a special Philadelphia Candies project to support Valley families affected by autism.
In observance of National Autism Awareness Month, Philadelphia Candies is hosting its annual Sweet Pieces for Autism campaign. Stop by the Hermitage, Pa., location, 1546 E. State St., or the Boardman location, 1449 Boardman-Canfield Road, from now until April 30 and purchase a 1.5 oz. chocolate puzzle pop. All proceeds will be donated to the programs of the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley.

Students of the Inspiring Minds After-School Program will serve meals from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, Front Street, downtown. The Giving Back to the Community Family Event is presented by Inspiring Minds and the Youngstown Afterschool Alliance.
