Canfield Village Middle School tipped off new tradition at its first Students Versus Staff basketball game on April 8. In front of a standing-room only crowd, members of the seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls basketball teams took on members of the CVMS staff in a battle for the ages.
CVMS home economics teacher Angela Alexandrides and CVMS Principal Judd Rubin coordinated the event.
“Mr. Rubin brought the idea of a students versus staff basketball game from his previous school. It is a fun event where the students get to see the teachers and staff in a different light. And it provides a bit of fun before the students start their state tests next week,” Alexandrides said.
The event also offered a 50/50 raffle with members of the school’s student council helping to sell tickets. Concessions were also available, with CVMS staff members donating items and manning the booth. CVMS cheerleaders were also on hand to cheer on both teams.
“We have many staff members, who decided not to play in the game, volunteering in other areas tonight,” Alexandrides said.
According to Alexandrides, all money raised at the event will go straight back into the school.
“The money raised tonight will go straight back to the school and stay in the building. It will be used for anything that the staff or students might need,” Alexandrides said.
After a hard fought contest, with seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls all having their turn taking on the staff, the teachers upended the students with a final score of 111-86.
