Assault charge

Assault charge

GIRARD

A man was booked into the Trumbull County Jail on a warrant Tuesday evening after purportedly punching a woman and knocking out some of her teeth.

Jonathan Cunning, 24, of Youngstown is charged with felonious assault. He is jailed on a $250,000 bond.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded to Stull Avenue on Sunday. There, a 28-year-old woman told police she knocked her teeth out when she fell down the stairs, according to a police report. Police later heard from hospital officials that the woman admitted Cunning had punched her in the mouth.

Officers interviewed the woman again, and she stated Cunning and his friend came to her home early Sunday. She said Cunning refused to leave and seemed intoxicated, police reported. The report says Cunning then punched her in the mouth, causing her to fall to the floor. Cunning’s friend called an ambulance for the woman, police said.

Closure continues

YOUNGSTOWN

The third and fourth levels of the Lincoln Avenue deck at Youngstown State University will remain closed through the end of the semester. The first and second floors remain open.

The closure follows a piece of concrete falling off of the structure, damaging two vehicles. No one was injured.

A consulting engineer evaluated the deck Wednesday, finding that though the deck is structurally sound, repairs are needed to the area that was damaged, according to a news alert distributed Wednesday by the university. YSU will keep the third and fourth levels closed while those repairs are made.

Gun, drug found

YOUNGSTOWN

Vice-squad officers serving a search warrant about 4:55 p.m. Tuesday at a 2740 South Ave. home found a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and suspected cocaine.

Taken into custody was Joseph McLendon, 40, who lists the home as his address, on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A digital scale also was found in the house, and four rounds of ammunition were found in the garage, reports said.

Reports said McLendon is barred from owning a handgun because of a 2004 drug conviction from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Worker suspended

WARREN

An employee of the Trumbull County Dog Pound has been suspended without pay for three days for swearing at a member of the public over the phone.

Kim Smith, a clerical specialist who answers the phone and has a lot of contact with the public, made the comment after a man called the dog pound with a complaint about a dog that his female companion had adopted from the dog pound, said James Keating, human resources director.

Smith’s supervisor, executive Dog Warden Gwen Logan, walked into the room and overheard her comment, Keating said.

Smith has worked for the county since November 1994 and earns $18.74 per hour.
