Bond was set at $150,000 Monday in municipal court for a man police accused of trying to ram a car Friday with two vice squad officers inside.

Kevin Roman, 18, of East Philadelphia Avenue, was arraigned before Judge Robert Milich on charges of felonious assault on a police officer and a warrant for aggravated robbery.

Reports said two vice officers tried to pull over a car Roman was driving at 8:45 p.m. Friday for running a stop sign on Chicago Avenue on the South Side when Roman led them to a parking lot and then drove straight at them at high speed. He was eventually caught at a West Warren Avenue home.

Utility upgrades at YSU

COLUMBUS

The state Controlling Board released nearly $1 million Monday for utility upgrades at Youngstown State University.

The $995,942 will be used to replace a 1,250-foot section of buried steam and chilled water piping between Meshel and Bliss halls. The existing system “has deteriorated to the point where the entire section leaks and needs to be replaced,” according to documents.

Utility Contracting Inc. of Youngstown submitted the low bid for the work.

Also Monday, lawmakers OK’d $53,780 for two new industrial trash compactors at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg.

Minutes with mayor

Mayor John A. McNally has scheduled a five-minutes-with-the-mayor session beginning at 5 p.m. today in McNally’s office in Youngstown City Hall, 26 S. Phelps St. Residents are invited to meet with the mayor to ask questions and voice concerns about issues in the city.

Poland shop break-in

POLAND

Township police continue their investigation of a break-in that occurred Saturday morning at Sami Quick Shop, 3067 Center Road.

According to a police report, a store employee called police after coming into work and realizing there was a break-in. Police said the store’s steel doors, signs, alarm sirens and safe were damaged.

Items missing were a computer tower, a DVR recording device, $300 in cash and coins and more than 400 packs of cigarettes valued at more than $2,600.

Drugs, gun in car

A Pearl Street man is in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $22,500 bond after reports said officers found 35 painkillers and a gun and ammunition in the van he was driving Sunday.

Brandon Reid, 24, was arraigned in municipal court Monday before Judge Robert Milich on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of drugs.

Reports said a van Reid was driving was pulled over at 6:10 p.m. in a parking lot in the 800 block of Oak Street on the East Side after an officer spotted him driving too fast.

A police dog from Poland detected drugs in the car, and officers found a 9 mm Ruger semiautomatic handgun and a clip of ammunition under the front passenger’s seat. Reports said Reid told police the gun was his and he forgot it was in the van.

53 stops in patrol blitz

AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle while Impaired Task Force, in partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, conducted a coordinated saturation patrol blitz in the township Friday.

Officers made 53 traffic stops, resulting in one citation for a seat-belt violation, two citations for speed, two summonses for driving under suspension, one citation for a marked-lanes violation and one citation for an expired license.

Disabled man stabbed

WARREN

A developmentally disabled man, 23, of Youngstown, suffered stab wounds to his arm, back and rib area early Monday.

Police said the man was apparently stabbed by another man with special needs at a home on Federal Street Northwest at 4 a.m. Monday.

The victim was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. The suspect was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for an evaluation and then transported to another unspecified facility. No charges have been filed.

Police said they were told by two caregivers the suspect had been brought to the Federal location at 2 a.m. to stay for a few hours because he had been “acting strange” at his other location.

A caregiver said the victim was in the kitchen alone when the suspect went in for a drink of water, and the caregiver heard screaming and found the victim bleeding. The suspect fled. Police found him about an hour later near North Park and Forest avenues with a large steak knife in his pocket.

2 injured on Feederle

WARREN

A 22-year-old Struthers man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg, and another man, 20, of Prentice Road in West Farmington, suffered unspecified injuries in a 10:20 p.m. Sunday incident on South Feederle Drive Southeast.

The Struthers man was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital after police made a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving the South Feederle Drive area where police responded for gunshots. That victim was inside the car.

The second victim is mentioned as having a “major injury,” but no information was provided on what type of injury he suffered or where he was taken.

Fire closes US 224

BOARDMAN

Police and fire officials responded to a fire at J&M Car Wash on Boardman-Canfield Road at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Officials temporarily closed the road while containing the blaze. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
