Oil-drilling facility comes under fire

LOS ANGELES

One of California’s early offshore oil drilling operations is under fire from state regulators to clean up its act after severely corroded and unsafe wells and other equipment were found at the idle facility as part of ramped-up inspections.

The Department of Conservation focused its renewed enforcement efforts on a facility with ties to an oil company with a long history of spills that allowed man-made Rincon Island wells to fall into disrepair near a popular surf spot on the Southern California coast.

“The number of long-term idle wells at this site in the marine environment is of great concern,” said Ken Harris, supervisor of the Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources known as DOGGR. “The operator has failed to maintain the facility to regulatory standards.”

US to join relief effort after quakes in Japan

MINAMIASO, Japan

Ten people remained missing today in southern Japan from two powerful earthquakes that killed at least 42 people, as the U.S military announced it was preparing to join relief efforts and Toyota said it would suspend nearly all of its vehicle production in Japan.

Thousands of rescue workers fanned out in mountainous terrain to search for the missing. Rescue helicopters could be seen going into and out of the area, much of which has been cut off by landslides and road and bridge damage.

U.S. Forces Japan said it was getting ready to provide aerial support for Japan’s relief efforts. The U.S. has major Air Force, Navy and Marine bases in Japan, and stations about 50,000 troops in the country.

Legislators vote to impeach official

BRASILIA, Brazil

Brazil’s lower house of Congress voted late Sunday to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, delivering a major blow to a long-embattled leader who repeatedly argued that the push against her was a “coup.”

Rousseff is accused of using accounting tricks in managing the federal budget to maintain spending and shore up support. She has said previous presidents used similar maneuvers and stressed that she has not been charged with any crimes or implicated in any corruption scandals.

PHILADELPHIA

The parent of a 4-year-old girl who was killed in a Philadelphia neighborhood has confessed accidentally shooting her, police said.

Authorities were unsure whether the man, later identified as Maurice Phillips, is her father or stepfather, but said he told police it was him Saturday night. The child originally was believed to have been fatally shot by her young brother.
