SENIOR SIDELIGHTS


Guardian Angels of Ohio, a volunteer program of Trumbull County Probate Court, is looking for new volunteers. Angel volunteers receive training to become advocates who reach out as friends to seniors who may need a friendly phone call, a visit in a nursing home or a visit at home. Angels also are involved in planning special events for seniors such as health fairs and Make a Difference Day projects. Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., offers a $3 lunch each Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and bingo follows from 1 to 2:30. Bingo cards are 25 cents each. Zumba Gold, a version of the exercise dance class designed for older adults, will be offered at 1:15 p.m. every Thursday. Instructor is Will Mowell. Each class is $1 and is supported by the Trumbull County Senior Levy Services. A dental van will visit the center from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Services include a hygienist for cleaning or a dentist for dental procedures and are free to those who qualify. A podiatry services clinic will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, by appointment only. The attending doctor is Dr. Thomas Pokabla. All participants must take their insurance card as regular co-pays will apply. The Social Outreach program of S.C.O.P.E. of Trumbull County offers support and connects senior citizens to affordable resources for chores, personal care, transportation, financial issues, finding housing and more. David Raach, S.C.O.P.E.’s Social Services Outreach director, will provide a programs from 2 to 4 p.m. April 26. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins will be accepted. Senior Independence Senior Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has planned the following: Tuesday, brush, knife and needle club and New Middletown Fun Day sponsored by Sunrise Assisted Living and TLC Ins. Group at 10 a.m., beginner and intermediate bridge at noon and Drums Alive exercise at 2:30; Wednesday, computer classes for basic, intermediate and advanced at 9 and 11 a.m., watercolors at 10, tap class at noon, 500 card club at 1 p.m. and line dancing at 1:30; Wednesday through Friday, Lancaster show trip and Dutch country; Thursday, woodcarvers at 9 a.m., needlecraft and Boardman Fun Day at Boardman Park sponsored by the center, Sunrise Assisted Living and Park Vista Retirement at 10, and Watch Our Weight at 1 p.m.; and Friday, R.O.M. exercise at 10.
