Mill Creek ABWA plans auction, crowns Woman of the Year

CANFIELD

Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction April 24 at the Ursuline Center, 4380 Shields Road.

Doors will open to the public at 12:30 p.m., and drawings will begin at 3.

Admission is $5 and provides a chance a door prizes, 25 chances on table gifts and a refreshment.

Table gifts are valued at $10 and up, and the special raffle will have gifts for more than $25 in value.

Proceeds will go to the chapter’s education fund to support local students attending area universities.

The chapter met March 8 at Piccadilly Parlour, where member Darlene Demjen was crowned as the chapter’s 2016-17 Woman of the Year.

Demjen is a 1974 graduate of Struthers High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in 1979 with a concentration in mathematics.

She worked in data processing at The Vindicator for 20 years, then began her employment with The Compass Family and Community Services where she has worked for the past 15 years.

Demjen also is active as chief elder of Rockview Christian Church and volunteers with Special Olympics and Relay for Life.

A 32-year chapter member, she has served on many committees and will be attending either the spring conference or the national convention in the fall.
