Parker Hannifin layoffs continue
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Layoffs at the Parker Hannifin Corp. plant continued this week.
The hydraulic gear pump plant, 2701 Intertech Drive, is permanently shutting down and will have multiple waves of layoffs.
The layoffs started in January, according to Parker’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state.
The next wave of layoffs will be from April 15-29. Employees are laid off by their seniority level. A total of 137 employees are to be affected by the shutdown, which is on an 18-month time line.
The company announced a shutdown last fall because of a weakness in a variety of markets the plant serves from construction to oil and gas and an increase in global competition.
Of the 137 employees, 107 are represented by United Steel Workers Local 2332.
The union and the company negotiated a shutdown package in October that includes enhancements to a severance package and health care considerations.
Employees who elect not to take the severance package have the option to get company-paid health care from six months to two years, depending on the number of years worked.
