Boy, 13, arrested on assault charge

BOARDMAN

Police arrested a 13-year-old township boy on an assault charge. According to a police report, officers made the arrest Thursday after an investigation revealed he reportedly assaulted another boy on the school bus Monday afternoon.

After his arrest and booking, officials released him to his mother’s custody. He will await his pending appearance in juvenile court in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Homes hit by gunfire

WARREN

Two homes were hit by gunfire Thursday night.

The first was at 11:50 p.m. in the 200 block of Iowa Avenue Northwest and involved two to three shots in front of the house.

The home’s two occupants were not injured. Police found bullet holes in the front of the house, including the screen door, window and siding.

The second one occurred at 12:28 a.m. in the 2300 block of Stephens Avenue Northwest – about 1.5 miles away. Police found seven bullet holes, but they reported no other information.

Foundation gives $10K to Yellow Brick Place

Yellow Brick Place Cancer Wellness Center, 2959 Canfield Road, Suite 10, will acknowledge a gift of $10,000 from the Mahoning Valley Hospital Foundation during a grant award and recognition ceremony at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Yellow Brick Place supports and educates cancer patients and those closest to them by providing individual and group services in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, providing a hopeful environment for cancer patients, families and caregivers. Lecture on Warhol

Elaine Rusinko, a professor of Russian at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, will deliver a free lecture on artist Andy Warhol at 1 p.m. today at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave.

Titled “We Are All Warhol’s Children: Andy and the Rusyns,” the lecture will explore the artist’s Carpatho-Rusyn ethnicity and explores its possible influence on his persona and his art.

It also will analyze the Rusyns’ reception of Warhol, with a focus on the history of the Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborci, Slovakia.

The late Warhol was a Pittsburgh native whose grandparents were immigrants and Carpatho-Rusyns.

Disorderly conduct

AUSTINTOWN

Officers issued a Youngstown man a summons for disorderly conduct after he was found lying in a parking lot on Mahoning Avenue earlier this week.

According to a police report, officer William Hoelzel, after several attempts, was able to understand the suspect, who continuously repeated his name and Social Security number, as well as saying he had $3 in his pocket.

Kalvin Franklin, 52, of Fairgreen Avenue, Youngstown, told Hoelzel he was lying down because he was unable to stand on his own after drinking at three parties and a bar Tuesday night. Franklin has a hearing at 6 p.m. Monday in Mahoning County Area Court.

Niles seeks applicants for MVSD board seat

City council is seeking applicants to fill a seat on the board of directors of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, the water provider for Niles and Youngstown. The successful applicant will serve a three-year term beginning May 6.

Applicants must be city residents. They should submit a letter of application explaining their interest in the position and a resume listing qualifications for consideration. Each letter and resume must be in a sealed envelope marked “Application for MVSD Director.” Deadline for submission is 4 p.m. April 27.

Applications will be accepted at the mayor’s office on the first floor of Niles City Hall, 34 W. State St., Niles, OH 44446.

Community garden seeks votes for grant

Southside Community Garden, corner of Williamson Avenue and Erie Street, is attempting to receive a Seeds of Change grant, and voting must be done online at seedsofchangegrant.com.

People can vote daily until Monday. You can enter Youngstown or Southside Community Garden in the search link. The top 50 vote-getters will be announced Wednesday, and the grant recipients will be announced May 3. Lois Martin- Uscianowski is garden caretaker.
