MCCTC wins gold at Family, Career and Community Event

Ten seniors and four juniors from the Early Childhood Education Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center attended the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Regional Skills Events at Tallmadge High School on March 5 and brought home 13 gold medals and one silver medal for their efforts.

Seniors Contessa Barrett (West Branch), Alayna Gordon (Jackson-Milton), Lilliana Irizarry and LaKayla Weaver (Campbell) participated in the Early Childhood Team Event, which required them to spontaneously develop and present before the judges a schedule of activities and a thematic curriculum web that integrates the Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards. The team earned gold medals.

Senior MaKayla Shea (Austintown Fitch) created a Curriculum Unit Display Board that represented activities that she presented to the Head Start classroom. Shea earned a gold medal.

Senior Lauryn Ellis (Boardman) developed a Language and Literacy Activity to go along with the picture book, “Elmer,” and presented an extension activity to coordinate with the story. Ellis brought home a silver medal.

Senior Precious Mitchell (Austintown Fitch) planned a Specific Task Assessment Resource box of materials to demonstrate ways to assess children’s language and literacy development. Mitchell earned a gold medal.

Seniors Arlessa Douglass (Struthers), Mackenzie Pringle and Diana Schell (Austintown Fitch) presented an Illustrated Talk about Shaken Baby Syndrome. These students created a display board of their findings and made presentations to classmates, Head Start parents and staff, to earn gold medals.

Juniors Hanna Moore (Austintown Fitch), Danielle Shreve (West Branch), Kayla Windsor (Poland) and Samantha Zarlengo (Austintown Fitch) participated in the Early Childhood Team event. They brought home gold medals.
