YOUNGSTOWN

Fishing season is officially underway at Mill Creek MetroParks, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife on Thursday stocked Lake Glacier with 2,500 rainbow trout.

The purpose of restocking the lake, which is done every year by the Division of Wildlife, is to provide recreational fishing opportunities to area anglers.

“We provide those fish for some really good, positive fishing opportunities in Mahoning County,” said Peter Novotny, Division of Wildlife District 3 manager.

“It’s there for getting a good catching experience, and being able to take fish home,” he said. “These fish are cold-water species, so that’s why we do this in the spring and fall when the water is colder.”

Mill Creek MetroParks requires the following of those who fish at Lake Glacier:

State of Ohio fishing licenses are required.

Foul-hooks are not permitted.

Limit of five fish per person, per day.

No fishing is permitted in the area directly adjacent to the Lake Glacier Boathouse.

Division of Wildlife officers and MetroParks police are authorized to check for current fishing licenses and to inspect all fish that are caught, park officials said in a release.

Some area wildlife advocates have called into question the restocking of the lake this year, given the massive fish kill in Mill Creek Park’s Lake Newport last summer. Division of Wildlife and MetroParks officials, however, said they are not concerned about water quality and its impact on recreational fishing.

“We didn’t share that concern. The fish are safe to eat,” said Novotny.

City health officials previously told The Vindicator that there are no health advisories or warnings about eating fish caught from Lake Glacier.

“Hopefully, we have good weather so people can enjoy it,” Novotny said. “I think it’s a great thing for families.”
