A 13-year-old boy faces several charges in Mahoning County Juvenile Court after officers said he led them on a chase that ended when the stolen vehicle he was driving ran into a tree in the 2700 block of Hudson Avenue.
Reports said an officer on patrol spotted the vehicle about 10:55 a.m. at South and East Florida avenues on the South Side and tried to pull it over because it matched the description of a vehicle reported stolen earlier in the day.
Reports said the vehicle pulled over and the officer got out of his cruiser, but it drove away and led the officer on a chase through several streets at speeds up to 70 miles per hour before it smashed into a tree.
Four males and one female jumped out and tried to run away, two of whom were injured and one who was caught behind a house. The driver was caught after he was tracked by his phone to a home in the 300 block of St. Louis Avenue, where he was found hiding in a bathroom, police said.
The other juveniles were released to their families, reports said. One juvenile remained at large late Thursday.
