Dialogue on race, infant mortality set

The kickoff event of A Community Dialogue on Race, with the high rate of black infant mortality a major topic, will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 28 at Mill Creek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave., near Ridge Avenue.

In Youngstown and Mahoning County, black babies are three times more likely to die before their first birthday than babies of other races, a rate that is almost double the rest of the nation.

Orthopedics camp

The Sharon Regional Health System’s Orthopedics Joint Camp is set for 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Diagnostic & Imaging Center, 2435 Garden Way, Hermitage.

The free Orthopedics Joint Camp educational session is to learn what to expect when preparing for surgery, the care that will be received during the hospital stay and what a patient can do to best ensure a quick and full recovery when they return home.

HIV/AIDS ministry plans presentation

Linda Titus, director of Casa Madre, and Dan Wakefield, director of special projects of the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS ministry, will speak about programs and services offered for children and families by the ministry at 6:30 p.m. today April 12 at St. John’s Episcopal Church Parish House, 323 Wick Ave.

The presentation includes discussion of the challenges faced by those with HIV/AIDS and the effects of current law on this population. Youngstown Area Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) support group meeting will follow.
