Victorian medical items on display

WARREN

An exhibit of Victorian-era medical instruments from the Melnick Medical Museum at Youngstown State University is on display at the Sutliff Museum, inside Warren Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. The exhibit shows how discoveries in technology and medicine impacted the Victorians’ views of health and the medical profession. The humoral theory of health was prevalent at the time, and bleeding was a common treatment. The exhibit includes tools doctors used to perform this task.

And although scientific evidence was beginning to show the cause of disease, quack medicine and fraudulent self-care devices were common. Victorians were especially enthusiastic about the health benefits of electricity and electrical devices, and the exhibit features the Kidder Magneto and an electro-galvanic belt.

Admission is free. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Go to sutliffmuseum.org or call 330-395-6575.
