Police ID Ohio officer in critical condition after shooting

COLUMBUS (AP) — Authorities have released the identity of a Columbus police officer critically injured after police say a man opened fire on a SWAT team trying to arrest him Sunday.

Columbus police today identified the injured officer as police SWAT Officer Steven M. Smith. The police statement says the 54-year-old Smith remained in critical condition today at a Columbus hospital.

Smith is a 27-year veteran with the Columbus Division of Police.

Police have said the suspect refused to surrender after the shooting and police said several hours passed during which smoke and flames were seen in the suspect’s apartment. The 44-year-old man gave up around 7 a.m. Sunday after a loud bang was heard inside the apartment that police say was part of a strategy to end the standoff.
