OSHA fines company after worker’s death
CLYDE, OHIO
Federal safety regulators have fined a northern Ohio company more than $16,000 after a fatal accident in October.
The Blade in Toledo reported that the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said an employee of W.E. Soil Enhancement was overcome by hydrogen sulfide – a highly poisonous gas – while pumping manure into a tanker truck at a farm near Clyde.
The 31-year-old employee, who wasn’t identified, died from overexposure to toxic fumes. OSHA fined the company and issued three safety citations.
US gas prices jump
CAMARILLO, Calif.
The average price of gasoline has jumped by 8 cents over the past three weeks, to $2.10 a gallon for regular grade.
Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the hike is due to gas stations raising prices nearly twice as much as refiners are raising wholesale gasoline prices. She says prices will likely rise at a moderate pace as refiners continue to make higher-cost summer blend gasoline in compliance with federal regulations and as demand continues to rise.
In the Lower 48 states, the highest average price of regular gasoline was $2.80 per gallon in Los Angeles. The lowest was $1.67 in Tulsa, Okla.
Amtrak files suit over damaged track
WICHITA, Kan.
Amtrak has filed a federal lawsuit against a southwest Kansas feed yard, accusing it of gross negligence in relation to a train derailment that injured 28 passengers last month.
In the suit filed Friday by Amtrak and BNSF, the plaintiffs allege Cimarron Crossing Feeders failed to notify the railroad or law enforcement after one of the company’s trucks slammed into the railroad road bed and displaced the tracks by more than a foot.
A preliminary report released last week by the National Transportation Safety Board estimated damage from the derailment at $1.4 million.
