ODOT: More than $117M in road projects underway in Mahoning County

CANFIELD — The Ohio Department of Transportation has $117.4 million in active construction projects underway in Mahoning County, the state agency said during its Mahoning County Transportation Day program this afternoon in the Canfield public library.

By far the largest chunk of that is the ongoing $91.2 million widening of Interstate 80 from four to six lanes between state Routes 46 and 193 (Belmont Avenue), which began last year and will end in July 2018.

Various ramp closures and improvements and bridge replacements are occurring during the project, but at least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on I-80 during nonpeak travel times.

“It has the second-most truck traffic in the state. It’s a major connector between Chicago and New York City,” and the purpose of the widening is to help alleviate truck traffic congestion, said Brent Kovacs, an ODOT public information officer.
