YSU Greek Sing 2016 culminates Greek activities for school year
YOUNGSTOWN
For Hallie McGee and Sam Rakocy, co-chairmen of Youngstown State University Greek Sing 2016, the event at Stambaugh Auditorium on Saturday was their swan song.
“It is bittersweet. It is our last Greek Sing,” said McGee, of Brookfield, who along with Rakocy, of North Canton, are seniors and have been leaders in their respective organizations, Alpha XI Delta and Sigma Tau Gamma, for several years.
Cassie Hall, a freshman from Champion, is ending her first year at YSU and participated in her first Greek Sing as a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.
Hall admitted to some nervousness before their performance, but said after the performance that once she was on stage, the nervousness was gone.
“I love the Greek life,” she said.
Greek life is different than any other organization on campus, said Rakocy.
“You become friends with the entire Greek community. It is the quickest way to meet friends, particularly for someone like me who is from out of the area,” he said.
McGee, who has been in charge of Alpha Xi Delta’s performance for two years, also endorsed the Greek life.
It provides a lot of opportunities for leadership on campus, she said.
Of participating in the Greek Sing, McGee said she likes to perform and finds it fun to watch performances of the other chapters.
The theme of Greek Sing 2016, the 64th annual event, was “The ’90s,” meaning the nine sororities and fraternities and the four “open class” groups had to choose music from the 1990s to sing and dance to.
Among the selections were “It’s Raining Men” by Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, last year’s champions, and “A Hard Day’s Night” performed by Alpha Xi Delta, last year’s sorority champion.
Carrie Anderson, coordinator of the program that is the culmination of the school year for the Greek system, has been involved in running the event for several years and sang as a student for four years.
“It’s exciting to keep the tradition going,” Anderson said.
