• Gathering Place event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Lord of Life Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield. There will be a speaker from the Canfield Police Department at 11:30. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community-outreach social program offered to all senior citizens on the second Monday of each month. • Guardian Angels of Ohio, a volunteer program of Trumbull County Probate Court, is looking for new volunteers. Angel volunteers receive training to become advocates who reach out as friends to seniors who may need a friendly phone call, a visit in a nursing home or a visit at home. Angels also are involved in planning special events for seniors such as health fairs and projects for Make a Difference day. • Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave., is sponsoring an AARP Tax Aide Program for those with moderate to low income and all senior citizens each Tuesday and Thursday. The program ends this Thursday. No appointments are taken; taxes are done first come, first served from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For information on required documentation, call the center at 330-545-6596.
• Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., is offering free tax preparation by the AARP Tax Aide Program for those with moderate to low income and for senior citizens with simple returns, with the last program this Friday. Taxes will be done by appointment only from 9 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. Each Wednesday, a $3 lunch is offered at the center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and bingo follows from 1 to 2:30. Bingo cards are 25 cents each. The Social Outreach program of S.C.O.P.E. of Trumbull County offers support and connects senior citizens to affordable resources for chores, personal care, transportation, financial issues, finding housing and more. David Raach, S.C.O.P.E.’s Social Services Outreach director, will provide programs from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and April 26 at the Niles center. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins will be accepted. Zumba Gold, a version of the exercise dance class designed for older adults, will be offered 1:15 p.m. every Thursday starting April 14. Instructor is Will Mowell. Each class is $1 and is supported by the Trumbull County Senior Levy Services. Mercy Health will offer a free health screening from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday. Rashaun Speed, R.N. will administer blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. An eight hour fast is recommended. Registration is recommended for the screening. • Senior Independence Senior Center of Mahoning County, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has planned the following: Monday, income-tax preparation with AARP tax experts, by appointment only 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday, brush, knife and needle club and caregiver support presented by the Area Agency on Aging 11 at 10 a.m., beginner and intermediate bridge at noon and drums alive exercise at 2:30; Wednesday, computer classes for basic, intermediate and advanced at 9 and 11 a.m., watercolors and bereavement support group presented by Senior Independence Hospice at 10, tap class at noon, 500 card club at 1 p.m., and line dancing at 1:30; Thursday, woodcarvers at 9 a.m., needlecraft and St. Elizabeth’s diabetic support group at 10, Watch Our Weight at 1 p.m. and Welcome to Medicare presented by OSHIPP at 6; Friday, R.O.M. exercise and Youngstown Fun Day sponsored by Park Vista Retirement Community at 10 a.m.; and Saturday and next Sunday, National Watercolor Society from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call in advance to make reservations for classes and events at 330-744-5071.
