Austintown Fitch High School hosted a Souper Supper on March 9.

Students from Austintown Fitch High School and Austintown Intermediate School made ceramic bowls that were available to purchase during the Souper Supper event. This year was the seventh year the event has been put on by the Fitch Art Department and the PTA Council. The PTA Council consists of the PTA groups from the high school, as well as the middle, intermediate and elementary schools.

“The first year the event occurred was in 2009, Karen Weinberg was the founder,” said PTA Council president, Ellen DiFrancesco.

The PTA Council started helping in 2012 and took over putting on the event in 2013.

Chef Christopher Bonnaci from Christopher’s Downtown donated the soup; McDonald’s donated the beverages; Ed Demsky, the manager of Rulli Brothers, donated the bread; the Austintown Food Services provided spoons and the PTA members made desserts. Among the donated food were baskets that were up for raffle donated by the Board of Education, the superintendent, the principal team from each Austintown school and each school PTA.

“It’s to bring attention to disadvantaged families in Austintown. All the money raised from the purchase of the bowls and the simple meal of soup, roll and dessert goes directly to benefit the families in Austintown who are economically affected,” said Laurie Gartland, a chair member of the PTA who organized the event.

Different bands from Austintown schools performed, along with the Fitch Acapella group, to provide entertainment for the guests who attended the dinner.

Those who attended could either purchase a ticket for a bowl and dinner or they could purchase tickets for just a bowl or just a dinner separately. Nearly 300 dinners were served throughout the night.

PTA members volunteered to help serve the soup and sell tickets, along with the juniorettes from the Austintown Junior Women’s League who helped sell bowls and the baked items.
