Boardman library hosted a Read to Some Bunny event on March 19.

F5RS, which stands for Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies, & Feathered Friends Rescue & Sanctuary LLC, has a program called Bunnies in Baskets. Bunnies in Baskets visit places such as libraries and nursing homes for people to spend time with therapy rabbits. The F5RS rescue started in 1995 and Bunnies in Baskets started about five years ago.

March 19 was the first time the Bunnies and Baskets visited Mahoning County. Their first visit was at Beyond Expectations Speech Center. All of the therapy rabbits were rescues that were trained to become therapy animals.

There were a group of children who came to the Boardman library to visit the therapy bunnies and read to them. Three rabbits came, Natalie, Cricket and Wyatt. Wyatt is the newest addition to Bunnies and Baskets. There are currently four rabbits who are part of the group.

A table was set up with several books for the children to choose from to read to the rabbits. The rabbits are trained to stay in their baskets for about an hour so they can listen to the children as they read.

Getting visits from therapy rabbits is different than a therapy dog. The rabbits are able to be held and transported easier. The children were also excited to see something they might not normally see.

Bunnies is Baskets is expanding its visits and is greatly appreciative of the invitations it receives asking for visits to schools, libraries and other locations.
