1909: American explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson and four Inuits become the first people to reach the North Pole.

1917: Congress approves a declaration of war against Germany.

1945: During World War II, the Japanese warship Yamato and nine other vessels sail on a suicide mission to attack the U.S. fleet off Okinawa; the fleet was intercepted the next day.

1954: A month after being criticized by newsman Edward R. Murrow on CBS’ “See It Now,” Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis., is given the chance to respond on the program; in his pre-filmed remarks, McCarthy charges that Murrow had, in the past, “engaged in propaganda for Communist causes.”

2011: Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi appeals directly to President Barack Obama in a letter to end what Gadhafi called “an unjust war”; he also wishes Obama good luck in his bid for re-election.

2015: The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at the University of Virginia announces it will “pursue all available legal action” against Rolling Stone, saying a Columbia Journalism School review showed the magazine acted recklessly and defamed its members by publishing a discredited article that accused them of gang rape.

1991: The Struthers City School District agrees to readmit Chad Dylan Jones to his kindergarten class at Center Street Elementary School. He was sent home March 15 because school officials said his 6-inch ponytail violated the school’s dress code.

Youngstown police are looking for two men in the drive-by shooting death of Lorenzo Black, 17, who was gunned down outside the Abdel Supermarket at Hillman Street and Warren Avenue.

The removal of 12 miles of Conrail track in northern Trumbull County has been delayed to allow more time for a possible sale to be completed.

1976: Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter says an investigation has been launched into alleged but unspecific irregularities in the Water Department.

Canfield officials refuse to issue a building permit for a new post office on Broad Street because of sewage conditions, meaning that Canfield city and township may lose its post office.

Four-year-old Frank Spencer dies in a fire at the family home on South Lane Avenue in Youngstown. His body was found in his bedroom with the bodies of the family dog and cat. His mother and a sister were seriously injured.

1966: Youth shoplifters appearing before Lisbon’s Juvenile Court can expect detention time or removal from their families. Those 14 years or older will get detention; under 14 face removal from their families. There has been a rash of juvenile shoplifting in the community recently.

1941: W.K. “Ken” Ebel, former Youngstown resident and famous test pilot, is named vice president of engineering of the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore, one of the world’s largest airplane manufacturing companies. He is in charge of 1,400 engineers.

Youngstown is voted the 1942 Ohio Young Republican League’s convention site after the constitution is amended to allow the convention to take place outside of Columbus. Al Pritchard of Warren and Mrs. Sally Roberts of Youngstown are named to the executive committee.

More than 100 youths will compete for trophies and medals in the Mahoning County Junior Marksmanship Rifle Match at the Armory.
