A suspect in a homicide early Sunday arrested on a parole violation had been out of prison for a little more than 48 hours before he was shot in the face on a South Side street.

Jermaine Bunn, 39, who court records list has a Columbus address, was booked into the Mahoning County jail Monday after being treated for a gunshot wound he suffered in an exchange of gunfire that police say killed Michael Pete, 30, about 12:45 a.m. Sunday outside a home on East Evergreen Avenue.

Detective Sgt. John Perdue, the case’s lead investigator, said Bunn had just been released from prison Thursday.

Court records show Bunn was sentenced in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to seven years in prison in December 2009 after pleading guilty to charges of felonious assault and kidnapping. He was granted credit at the time for 227 days served, court records showed. He asked for an early release in prison but was denied in April 2015 by Judge Maureen A. Sweeney.

Detectives said Pete was shot during a party, and investigators do not know what triggered the exchange of gunfire. Bunn was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital by private car and treated for his wound before he was booked into the jail.

Arrested Tuesday on a warrant for felonious assault was Richard Williams, 24, address unavailable, for a March 11 shooting on the East Side.

Reports said a woman told police she was at a McGuffey Road gas station with her boyfriend. The boyfriend got in an argument with Williams when the boyfriend was inside the gas station paying for the gas, according to police reports.

Williams then followed the couple in his car to Stewart Avenue and Lansdowne Boulevard, where he fired four shots at them. All the shots missed, reports said.

Jail records did not list where Williams was taken into custody. He is expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.
