Luis Cruz Ramos, 30, who was shot Friday in the leg by a member of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force trying to elude law enforcement, was released Monday from St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and booked into the Mahoning County jail.

Police said Ramos shot at police officers when he didn’t stop his van just after midnight Thursday. Ramos is charged with being a fugitive from justice, illegal possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and aggravated menacing.

He has been on the run from law enforcement since 2013 when he was charged with rape in Puerto Rico.

Rape conviction

YOUNGSTOWN

A 56-year-old Canfield man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of three counts of raping a 14-year-old girl between August 2011 and June 2012.

Visiting Judge Joseph Gibson imposed the sentence Friday on Leon Gettings of South Broad Street.

The judge had convicted Gettings of the crimes after a two-day nonjury trial Feb. 29 and March 1.

8th OVI offense

Judge David D’Apolito told a man in Mahoning County Area Court on Monday, arrested for his eighth OVI offense, not to drive any type of motor vehicle.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officers arrested Joseph Rutherford, 40, of state Route 82 in Newton Falls, on Interstate 80 on Sunday for a marked-lanes violation, having an open container and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Rutherford pleaded not guilty to a felony OVI. His next court date has not been scheduled.

Roof replacement

COLUMBUS

The state Controlling Board released more than $3 million Monday for a roof replacement at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg. The funds will cover the costs of about 170,000 square feet of roof. According to documents, the roof was installed more than two dozen years ago and has been patched multiple times.

Industrial Energy Systems of Cleveland submitted the low bid for the work.

Lawmakers also OK’d $14,690 for water-pump repairs at the same prison. The current pumps are more than 24 years old. Trombold Equipment Co. from the Cleveland area is the sole source for the equipment, parts and service.
