Election board kicks Hughes off the ballot for sheriff

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Board of Elections disqualified Jimmy Hughes, a former Youngstown police chief, as an independent candidate for county sheriff today.

Hughes needed 663 valid signatures to get on the ballot. He turned in petitions with 1,028 signatures, but only 621 were ruled valid by the board.
