CANFIELD

The Cardinal Joint Fire District’s progressing third fire station on Herbert Road will enable better training opportunities not only for Canfield, but surrounding areas as well.

Marie Cartwright, Canfield Township trustee and fire district board member, said she’s excited that the department’s monthly training sessions will leave its close quarters and move into a standard, classroom-sized space.

The fire board has been concerned with building the station to be as efficient as possible – especially in space use, said John Morvay, Canfield city councilman and fire district board chairman.

“Every bit of space is being used most efficiently to enable us to have ongoing training without fussing with anything,” Morvay said.

Morvay said the fire station’s total cost is projected to be $2.5 million. The funding comes from a 1.25-mill levy, generating $627,854 annually, passed in 2014.

Don Hutchison, Cardinal Joint Fire District chief, said the training space will accommodate 56 people at one time. Cartwright said the classroom space also will be used by other departments in the county.

The plans go out to bid Wednesday and are due back April 29. The fire board will make a decision, tentatively, in May, Hutchison said.

Cartwright said the board won’t have an expected groundbreaking date until it receives the bids.

The design was done by both BSHM Architects in Youngstown and New York company Pacheco Ross Architect in Voorheesville, N.Y. Pacheco Ross Architect specializes in building fire stations across the country, Hutchison said.

Despite the specialized plans, Hutchison said the fire board is diligent about staying within the budget.

“When we brought them [the architects] on they [the fire board] made sure it didn’t increase the cost ...” Hutchison said. “We actually got a better product. It worked out very well.”
