German paper says it has data on offshore financial dealings

BERLIN

German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung says it has obtained a vast trove of documents detailing the offshore financial dealings of the rich and famous.

The Munich-based newspaper says it received the data from an anonymous source more than a year ago and shared it with more than 100 news organizations.

The work was coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalism, a nonprofit organization based in Washington.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung said Sunday the amount of data it obtained is several times larger than a previous cache of offshore data published by WikiLeaks in 2013 that exposed the financial dealings of prominent individuals.

Study: Huge global exercise contest shows much potential

CHICAGO

A workplace exercise challenge using pedometers and social media in a global competition shows potential to improve health in a study involving almost 70,000 employees in 64 countries.

In the program, office teams compete against each other or with groups at companies in other countries to see who can take the most daily steps during a 100-day challenge. Workers post progress on a special social media website – for motivation and to egg on rival teams.

The study found workers on average increased their daily activity by 3,500 steps, exercised for almost one extra day per week, reduced sitting time by about 45 minutes daily, and lost about three pounds during the contests. Whether the changes were lasting isn’t known.

The research was presented Sunday in Chicago at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting and published online in the group’s medical journal.

Britain aims to bolster ailing steel industry

LONDON

The British government says public-sector construction projects will be encouraged to use U.K.-made steel, a move designed to shore up an industry in crisis.

The government said Sunday that the new rules will “create a level playing field” and help British steelmakers compete with international rivals.

The steel industry in Britain, as in many developed economies, has been hit hard by cheap Chinese imports, which have depressed prices.

The British crisis became acute in March when India’s Tata Steel announced plans to sell its loss-making U.K. plants, which employ almost 20,000 people.

Tesla orders climb

NEW YORK

Demand for Tesla Motors’ new lower-priced electric car continued to climb over the weekend with pre-orders rising to 253,000.

CEO Elon Musk tweeted the numbers Saturday, which jumped 28 percent from 198,000 Friday. People pay $1,000 to reserve their vehicle.

The Model 3 is less than half the cost of Tesla’s previous models, and its range is about double what drivers get from current competitors in its price range, such as the Nissan Leaf and BMW i3. It starts at $35,000 and has a range of 215 miles per charge.
