21 WFMJ-TV baggers to help hunger drive

Local celebrities will bag groceries at the Giant Eagle grocery store, 1201 Doral Drive, on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. to help the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Harvest for Hunger campaign.
On-air personalities Dana Balash, Eric Wilhelm, Steve Vesey and Lindsay McCoy from 21 WFMJ-TV will bag groceries of customers that tear-off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon to benefit Second Harvest’s Harvest for Hunger. Donations are added to the customers’ grocery bill.

Springfield cleanup
NEW SPRINGFIELD
Springfield Township will host a spring cleanup and tire collection from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23.
Waste Management, 3510 E. Garfield Road, will be open to township residents during this time to drop off trash free. Freon, tires, batteries, standing liquids, yard waste, TVs or e-scrap will be accepted.
A tire recycling drive will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the same day at the Springfield Township Administration Building, 3475 E. South Range Road. Cost for the first six passenger tires is free; additional passenger tires, $2 each; semi-truck tires, $10 each; and agricultural tires, $20 each.
Events at Jennings
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.
Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, is seeking volunteers to remove invasive plants at the park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 16.
A lunch catered by North Country Brewing Co., and featuring some of the plants removed during the event, will be provided at the end of the work session. Each volunteer also will receive a native plant to take home. Participants must be age 12 or older and must be prepared to work outdoors, rain or shine.
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts also are invited to participate in a Scout Stewards, the second in volunteer service experiences at Jennings. The event is part of Jennings’ “Take Back the Woods: Battling Invasive Species” effort, and will take place 9 a.m. to noon April 17.
Cost is $5 per person for children and adults. It must be paid in advance, but it is refundable upon attendance at the event.

Summer job program
YOUNGSTOWN
The summer youth employment program of the Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services will return this year for its fifth season. Youth between the ages of 17 and 24 work from June through August and earn up to $10 an hour at one of more than 75 Mahoning County employers, Lori Murphy, JFS program administrator, told the county commissioners Thursday. Applications will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 11-15 in the JFS lobby. The head of the household applies on behalf of interested youth. Some $1.2 million is committed to the program this year. Last year, the program employed about 300 young people.
