Author to discuss Civil War soldier
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Jay Paisley, author of “The Huffman Letters,” will discuss the Civil War at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lawrence County Historical Society, 408 N. Jefferson St.
Paisley will discuss William Henry Huffman of Darlington Township, Pa., through an exploration of Huffman’s letters that highlight his experience during the Civil War. Huffman enlisted in the Union army in 1861 at age 16. He was a part of the 100th Pennsylvania Regiment (Roundheads), based in Lawrence County. He participated in more than 20 battles, including Fredericksburg and Vicksburg.
A book signing will follow the dicsussion. Books are $20.
Book discussion is set for April 26
SALEM
Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host a book discussion exploring “The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin in the library’s Quaker Room at 7 p.m. April 26.
The main character of Zevin’s novel has lost his wife, his bookstore is failing, and his prized, rare collection of Edgar Allen Poe’s poems has been stolen. His luck begins to change when an unexpected package appears at his bookstore and gives him the opportunity to make his life over.
The book is available to borrow from the Adult Services Department. The event is open to the public. For information, call the library at 330-332-0042. Salem book discussions meet the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Author to speak at Girard library
GIRARD
Girard Free Library, 105 E. Prospect St., will welcome author Thomas Welsh at 6:30 p.m. April 27 to discuss his book “Classic Restaurants of Youngstown.”
