Zallow, Sullivan break school records

The Youngstown State track and field team broke two school records, as freshman Chad Zallow made a new school mark in the 110-meter hurdles and sophomore Ryan Sullivan set a new record in the 10,000-meter run on Friday.

Zallow ran a time of 13.92 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles at the Florida Relays. Zallow’s mark broke the previous time of 14.00 seconds set by Jay Payne in 1993. His new school record placed him 18th in the event. Sullivan clocked a time of 30:00.39 in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Relays. His new mark surpassed the former record of 30:09.40 set by Matt Folk in 1998.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Austin McLean ran a time of 8:52.28 at the Stanford Relays.

In other running events at the Florida Relays, Leighton Antonio ran a time of 10.65 seconds and Carl Zallow clocked a time of 10.71 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Nina Grambling ran a time of 11.93 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Shatasia Walker clocked a time of 14.25 seconds and Ambler Eles ran a time of 14.27 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Jen Shiley competed in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.34.

Minney, Castiglione help salvage a split

ROCHESTER, MICH.

Junior Caitlyn Minney struck out eight and allowed just six hits and senior Miranda Castiglione went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 4-1 win over Oakland in game two of a doubleheader on Friday. The Penguins lost game one, 2-0.

With the split, the Penguins impove to 16-12 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 7-19 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Junior Sarah Dowd went 3-for-4 in the nightcap and scored a run and junior Alexandria Gibson had two doubles.

Castiglione hit a two-run home run, her fifth of the year, in the top of the first to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Dowd, who singled to right-center to lead off the game, scored on Castiglione’s homer to right-center field.

In the top of the third, Maria Lacatena extended the Penguins’ lead to 3-0 with a run-scoring single to right-center field that plated Gibson, who doubled.

Stevie Taylor doubled home Gibson, who hit her second double of the game, in the top of the fifth to push the YSU lead to 4-0.

The Golden Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the sixth but Minney would not allow any more.

In the opener, freshman Paige Geanangel was the hard-luck loser scattering just seven hits with two strikeouts and zero walks.

The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies close out the series with single game at Noon.

Penguins led Flames in suspended game

Friday’s baseball game between Youngstown State and UIC has been suspended with the Penguins holding a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game will resume today at 11 a.m. , and game two of the series will follow shortly after.

The Penguins scored the game’s first five runs, and YSU and UIC both scored in the sixth before the game was suspended due to rain with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

The Penguins scored twice in the first when Lorenzo Arcuri and Alex Larivee both singled and scored on an error. Billy Salem then singled and scored on Kyle Benyo’s two-out single in the third to put the Penguins up 3-0.

The top of the order came through again in the fifth as the Penguins increased their lead to 5-0. Larivee hit a one-out triple to center, and Salem followed with a single up the middle past a drawn-in infield. Salem advanced to third on Andrew Kendrick’s single and scored on a wild pitch.
