In honor of children’s author Dr. Seuss’s birthday, kindergarten students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School celebrated with variety of themed days Feb. 29 through March 4.

Monday was Crazy Hat Day, Tuesday was Crazy Socks Day to honor “The Fox in Socks” and Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday, during which the children were encouraged to dress wacky. On Thursday, the children wore green and made and tasted green eggs and ham, and on Friday, the students dressed as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters.

Tammy Sabrin’s kindergarten class, dressed in green, made green eggs and ham in their classroom on March 3. While the focus of the project was the book “Green Eggs and Ham,” Sabrin also taught the students how to crack eggs and the process of cooking scrambled eggs.

Each student received an egg and had the opportunity to crack it into a bowl. When all the eggs were in the bowl, Sabrin stirred them up and poured them into a skillet to cook them, explaining that the heat cooks the eggs. She encouraged the students to watch the eggs turn from a “gooey” state into scrambled eggs.

As she stirred the eggs in the skillet, she asked the students how they were going to turn the eggs green. As she picked up a bottle of green food coloring and added it to the eggs, the students cheered, ooohed and ahhhed, and recited the story of “Green Eggs and Ham.”

When the eggs were a bright green color, Sabrin mixed in the ham. She then dished out a portion for each student to taste.

As she surveyed the students, the reviews were a bit mixed, but overall, the students gave a thumbs up to the green eggs and ham. There were even a couple students who had said ahead of time that they would not like the green eggs and ham, but when they tried it, they liked it.

“Most of you liked the green eggs and ham, some of you did not. And that’s okay. But at least you all tried the green eggs and ham and that’s great. A couple of you said you would not like them, but ended up liking them. Just like in the book. Good job!” Sabrin told her students.
