Dr. Dalia Fadila will speak about being an Arab-Muslim woman in Israeli society during a presentation from 6:309 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. She is president of Al-Qasemi Academy, an Arab college of education in Israel and founder of Q Schools, private schools for teaching English in Israel. Light refreshments will be served.

Grandma foils scam

Township police handled a reported case of telecommunications fraud Wednesday in which an unknown person tried to scam an 83-year-old victim out of $1,500. A Buchanan Drive resident told police she received a call that day from a man who claimed to be her grandson. The man reportedly told her he needed her to send $1,500 for legal expenses after getting a drunken-driving infraction while in New York. Another person claiming to be a lawyer also reportedly talked to her during the call. The victim reportedly refused to send money, then called her grandson to confirm that he was not the person who had called her.

Student seminar

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning Valley high school students will learn important life skills at financial seminar April 7 in the Kilcawley Center Chestnut Room at Youngstown State University. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 9 a.m. welcome. Topics include credit cards, investing and making a personal budget. The event is offered at no-charge to area high school educators through YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration, the Associated School Employees Credit Union and Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley Inc. April is Financial Literacy Month.

Road closing extended

VIENNA

Warren Sharon Road between Sodom Hutchings Road and state Route 193 in Vienna has extended its closing from Saturday through Thursday for a sanitary sewer repair being performed by Kirila Contractors. The recommended detour is south on state Route 193, east on state Route 82 and north on Sodom Hutchings.

No one injured in Hubbard house fire

HUBBARD

Firefighters were called to a house fire at 46 Bentley St. at 7:37 p.m. Thursday. None of the occupants of the home was injured, according to Trumbull County 911. Hubbard firefighters were still at the scene at 9:45 p.m. The cause of the blaze and the amount of damage it caused were undetermined at that time. Hubbard was assisted by Liberty, Brookfield and Youngstown Air Reserve Station fire units.

Deliberations begin in Sims’ murder trial

YOUNGSTOWN

Jurors in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court began deliberations late Thursday in the murder trial of Keith Sims, 27, of Ford Avenue, who is charged with murder and felonious assault in the Oct. 25, 2014, murder of Shaniece Wells, 23, of Maplewood Court. They are to resume deliberations today before Judge Maureen Sweeney. They have been hearing testimony since Tuesday. Sims is accused of shooting Wells after an argument between different groups of women outside his home.

Culvert replacement

CANFIELD

From Monday through next Friday, U.S. Route 62 (Canfield Road) between Mellinger and Raccoon roads will be closed for a culvert replacement. The official detour will be state Route 46 to U.S. Route 224 to state Route 625. The work is the beginning of a $900,000 project to replace 10 culverts along various Mahoning County routes. The entire project is to be completed by July, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
