AUSTINTOWN

Austintown police arrested a suspect Tuesday in robberies at convenience stores in Boardman and Austintown.

Police from both agencies began searching for Marc Schadel, 29, of Austintown about 5 a.m. and confirmed he had been taken into custody shortly before 6 p.m.

Austintown Police Chief Robert Gavalier said Tuesday night that township police arrested Schadel in a neighborhood off Kirk Road after a pursuit on that road.

“They threw stop sticks down to get the vehicle to stop on Kirk,” said Gavalier, adding that Schadel was in the same vehicle he is accused of using in the robberies.

Police chased him into a backyard and arrested him there.

The search began shortly after Boardman police were dispatched to Circle K, 7103 Lockwood Blvd., at 5 a.m. for a reported robbery. The suspect reportedly approached the checkout counter with an energy drink, handed the cashier a note demanding money and then fled with the drink when the employee refused to give him money.

Less than 10 minutes later, a similar incident occurred at a convenience store at 3670 S. Meridian Road in Austintown, and police determined it likely was the same suspect. Schadel reportedly got away with approximately $150 in that robbery.

He then reportedly led Youngstown police on a chase, which was terminated without catching Schadel.

Austintown police also consider Schadel a suspect in the theft of a vehicle from a Wyndclift Circle residence early Tuesday, as well as for a theft of firearms from the same residence Friday, according to a police report.

A search of Mahoning County court records shows that Schadel has faced a litany of charges since 2005, including a 2011 conviction for robbery that landed him in prison.

Schadel is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area here for arraignment today. Police officials say it is likely that other charges will be filed.
