Baby Safety Month
Baby Safety Month
BOARDMAN
According to the Ohio Department of Health, every week, three babies in Ohio die as a result of an unsafe sleep environment; and in Mahoning County, approximately four babies die each year.
Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is leading a comprehensive campaign to make sleep safer for infants. The program aims to reduce the number of sleep-related infant deaths and the overall infant mortality rates in Mahoning and Trumbull counties through a targeted education and community awareness campaign.
Recently, a number of gifts were given to support Akron Children’s Safe Sleep Program.
They are: The Walter and Helen Bender Memorial Fund, Youngstown Foundation, and the Walter and the Caroline Watson Foundation, $10,000 each; Crittenton Trust of the Youngstown Foundation, $5,000; Gianna’s Light, $1,500; Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance Health Education Initiative, $1,300; and SIDS Network of Ohio Mini Grant, $500.
September is Baby Safety Month and is the perfect time to draw attention to the vital role that safe sleep plays in reducing infant mortality rate in our region,” said Dr. Elena Rossi, M.D., associate chairwoman of pediatrics at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, who is leading the program.
